Made famous by Gene Kelly and Tommy Steele, this musical is a magical example of how cinema and theatre together can generate an impressive musical score and spectacle

Production Director - Jim Snell, Musical Director - John Edwards.

The title song of this magical musical was written by Arthur Freed & Nacio Herb Brown as long ago as the 1920ís, being written for "The Hollywood Revue of 1929" - one of the silver screenís first all-talking spectacles. Since then, it has appeared in no fewer than six movies. It was the title tune for the celebrated 1952 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film musical which starred Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds and Jean Hagen. It was not until 30 June 1983, that the first staged production was seen, which starring Tommy Steele immediately became a smash hit. With seven musical pieces from the original film and additional classic material from a host of well-known sources, the musical score is powerful.

The setting for the show is the Hollywood studios of Monumental pictures: the year being 1927. During the last days of the silent film era, Lina Lamont and Don Lockwood are teamed as the stars of the romantic screen. When sound is introduced, Lina seems doomed as her speaking voice, none too good for the recording equipment, breaks it. Don and a friend come up with the idea of dubbing Lina's voice with that of a young woman Kathy Selden. The technology works but threatens jeopardise Kathy's career and Don's off-screen romance with her. When Don reveals the truth publicly, Kathy's future is secured.
